Turkish Drone Violates Greek Airspace Near Alexandroupoli

A Turkish unmanned aerial vehicle violated Greek National Airspace on the morning of August 28, 2026, after entering the Athens Flight Information Region without a flight plan. The drone operated near the islands of Samothraki, Lemnos, and Thasos, as well as near Alexandroupoli Airport during a civilian flight departure.
The Hellenic Air Force responded by scrambling two F-16 fighter jets, which intercepted and monitored the UAV until it exited the area and returned to Turkish airspace. Greek officials stated that the incursion posed no safety risk to civilian aviation.
The incident occurred amid shifting military tensions in the Aegean. The Ministry of National Defense of Turkey previously warned that establishing a UAV base on Rhodes would be a threat to "peace and stability in the Aegean." However, the ministry characterized Greece's decision to relocate Patriot missile systems from Karpathos to Crete as a "positive step."
