AI Infrastructure Projects Proceed Amid New Federal Regulations

AI infrastructure development will continue through 2028 despite political scrutiny and new federal regulations on DNA synthesis machines to prevent bioweapon development.

AI infrastructure development is expected to continue through 2027 and 2028 despite negative polling and political scrutiny. While some state ballot initiatives have opposed AI and new governors-elect are questioning tax breaks, union labor, and electricity costs, projects already under construction are likely to proceed. Gina Hinojosa, the governor-elect of Texas, indicated she will not obstruct projects that already have "a shovel in the ground."

Industry analysts believe the $10 trillion AI infrastructure bill provides enough funding to address community concerns and offset the loss of tax breaks. Simultaneously, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy announced new regulations on DNA synthesis machines to mitigate the risk of AI being used to develop bioweapons.

Representative Ted Lieu has called for broader AI guardrails and public hearings. He stated that the government will pass legislation regarding "reasonable guardrails on AI and specifically data centers." However, analysts expect any resulting legislation to remain moderate to avoid presidential vetoes or Senate filibusters.
