Cameron Sexton Plans to Close Immigration Law Loophole

Tennessee Speaker of the House Cameron Sexton announced plans to eliminate a legal loophole that currently allows the Davidson County Sheriff's Office to avoid state immigration enforcement compliance laws. Under existing state law, Tennessee sheriff departments must comply with the federal 287(g) program, but Davidson County Sheriff Daron Hall has argued that his department is exempt based on the specific language of the law.

Sexton identified the registration of metro law enforcement entities as 287(g) participants as a priority for the 2027 legislative session. He stated that the goal is to ensure these entities are registered and to remove the existing loophole.

A spokesperson for the Davidson County Sheriff's Office indicated that the department anticipated this legislative move and will follow state law once the changes are implemented.
