Vanguard Report Shows Average 65-Year-Old Holds $300,000 in 401(k)

The Vanguard Group reports that the average 65-year-old has $300,000 in their 401(k), though median balances remain significantly lower across all age groups.

The Vanguard Group published its How America Saves 2025 report, revealing that the average 65-year-old holds approximately $300,000 in their 401(k) account. The data indicates a steady increase in average balances as workers age, beginning at $7,000 for those under 25 and climbing to over $270,000 for the 55-64 age bracket.

Despite these averages, the report highlights a significant gap between average and median balances caused by a small number of high-value accounts. For individuals aged 65 and older, the median balance is $95,000, substantially lower than the $300,000 average.

Financial guidance accompanying the data suggests that while these benchmarks offer a point of comparison, individuals should focus on personal targets. One such recommendation is for workers to save 10 times their salary by age 67 to ensure retirement readiness.
