Malawian Opposition Condemns Treason Charges Against Activist Sylvester Namiwa

Three Malawian opposition parties—the People’s Development Party, the UTM Party, and the United Democratic Front—issued a joint statement condemning the arrest and prosecution of activist Sylvester Namiwa. Namiwa, the executive director of the Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives, was arrested on July 31, 2026, and remanded to Maula Prison. He faces charges of treason for attempting to overthrow the government and publishing false information likely to cause fear and alarm.

The charges reportedly stem from Namiwa's public statements regarding corruption and accountability among public officials. Opposition leaders argue the prosecution is based on political speech from a single television interview rather than evidence of conspiracy or violence. The parties warned that treating criticism as conspiracy risks turning the country into a police state and appealed to the United Nations and African Union to monitor the case.

In addition to political leaders, the Malawi Human Rights Commission and the National Advocacy Platform demanded Namiwa's immediate release, citing violations of constitutional safeguards regarding personal liberty and expression. Civil society organizations have urged the Director of Public Prosecutions to discontinue the case in the interest of justice. The High Court has scheduled a bail hearing for next Wednesday.
