Auckland Business Confidence Rebounds After Iran Conflict Shocks
Auckland businesses show a strong recovery in confidence and hiring intentions as geopolitical risks from the Iran conflict recede, according to the Auckland Business Chamber.
Business confidence in Auckland rebounded sharply between May and August 2026, recovering from a downturn triggered by geopolitical shocks following strikes on Iran. According to the Auckland Business Chamber's August 2026 Business Confidence Survey, the share of businesses reporting negative sentiment dropped from 54% to 40%, while positive sentiment rose from 15% to 26%.
Simon Bridges, CEO of the Auckland Business Chamber, linked the recovery to the easing of global uncertainty and the receding Iran conflict. The rebound is evident in operational plans, with hiring intentions jumping from 36% to 50% and investment plans increasing to 59%. Cashflow pressures also improved significantly, as late customer payments fell from 48% to 29%.
Despite these gains, challenges remain. Consumer confidence and demand are the primary concerns for 64% of respondents, and 81% of businesses expect energy costs to continue rising. Additionally, concerns regarding AI adoption and digital transformation grew from 13% to 18%. Bridges noted that the results demonstrate business resilience and urged the future government to provide stability following November to maintain this momentum.
