Meta Invests $13 Billion in Alberta Data Center Campus

Meta Platforms Incorporated is investing $13 billion to construct a gigawatt-scale data center campus in Sturgeon County, Alberta. The facility will be the largest data center in the province and will be powered by natural gas. This project is a central part of the Government of Alberta's strategic initiative to attract artificial intelligence investment and establish the region as the compute capital of Canada.

To support this growth, the provincial government committed $50 million in funding for AI research at Amii to create jobs and develop local intellectual property. However, the surge in demand has strained the electrical grid. The Alberta Electric System Operator recently implemented a 1,200-megawatt cap on new connections after receiving proposals totaling 16,000 megawatts. The regulator warned that high demand from these projects could put upward pressure on electricity prices for residents.

In response, the government implemented a bring your own power strategy, requiring AI data centers to provide their own electricity sources to protect grid reliability. While the province has updated policies to ensure data centers pay for their own infrastructure costs, some early projects near Edmonton, including the Greenlight Electricity Centre expected to serve Meta, have not yet clearly adhered to these requirements.
