Sam Altman Predicts AI Will Replace Customer Support Roles

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated in an interview on The Tucker Carlson Show that artificial intelligence will likely replace many customer support roles conducted via phone or computer. He suggested that AI could create a punctuated equilibria moment, compressing the historical 75-year cycle of significant job shifts and accelerating workforce turnover.

Altman expressed uncertainty regarding the long-term impact on computer programmers. He noted that while AI has increased productivity and met high software demand, it remains unclear if the technology will result in more or fewer programming jobs over the next five to ten years.

In contrast, Altman identified nursing as a profession unlikely to be significantly impacted because patients desire deep human connection. This perspective aligns with views from DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis, who argued that human empathy makes nursing resistant to AI replacement, even if AI eventually assists with medical diagnoses.
