World Obesity Federation Urges UK to Unify Hunger and Obesity Plans
The World Obesity Federation is calling on the United Kingdom government to integrate hunger and obesity strategies into a single statutory framework to ensure food security.
The World Obesity Federation is urging the United Kingdom government to merge its strategies for combating hunger and obesity, arguing that treating the two as separate issues prevents effective solutions. This call for integration follows a report from the Health and Social Care Committee warning that the current government obesity plan is likely to fail.
Professor Kent Buse, co-chair of the World Obesity Federation's Policy and Prevention Committee, proposes that the government establish a statutory right to adequate food. His proposal includes the creation of a dedicated minister and an independent commission tasked with reporting annually to Parliament. Buse emphasizes the need for measurable targets and strict conflict-of-interest rules to prevent food manufacturers and retailers from influencing the policy-making process.
Parallel to these efforts, the Right to Food UK Commission has requested a legal duty on the government to ensure food security. Government ministers are expected to return to Parliament within three months to present a formal plan addressing these issues.
