Omoyele Sowore Accuses Nigerian Government of Secret Subsidies
Omoyele Sowore claims the Nigerian government secretly continues to subsidize fuel and the naira while favoring wealthy importers through customs concessions.
Presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore accused the Federal Government of Nigeria of secretly maintaining fuel subsidies despite public declarations that they had been removed. Speaking during an interview on Arise Television’s Morning Show on Tuesday, Sowore asserted that the administration is also subsidizing the naira to artificially maintain its exchange rate against the dollar.
Sowore criticized the government for using customs concessions and waivers to benefit wealthy importers instead of providing support for the poor. He argued that the official removal of subsidies led to a decline in the naira's value and increased poverty levels across the country.
While challenging the administration's transparency, Sowore maintained that subsidies are a standard global practice, provided they are specifically targeted toward the impoverished population.
