Aviation Industry Showcases Hybrid and Electric Flight at Farnborough
Aviation companies debuted hybrid-electric aircraft and eVTOL crafts at the Farnborough International Airshow to address carbon emissions and energy density challenges.
The aviation industry showcased a transition toward electric and hybrid propulsion systems at the Farnborough International Airshow, which opened on July 20, 2026. While fully electric aircraft like the Pipistrel Velis Electro are currently certified for pilot training, the industry is shifting toward hybrid-electric models for regional travel to overcome the weight and range limitations of current battery technology.
Heart Aerospace is developing the ES-30, a 30-seat hybrid aircraft designed for short-haul journeys. Simultaneously, GE Aerospace and NASA are collaborating on a parallel hybrid turboprop. In the urban mobility sector, Vertical Aerospace debuted an electric vertical-take-off-and-landing (eVTOL) craft intended for air taxi services.
Despite these technological debuts, officials note that the goal of net-zero emissions by 2050 remains difficult to achieve. Persistent challenges include the low energy density of batteries and the high emissions generated by long-haul, high-flying jets.
