Alphabet Inc. Opens TPU AI Chip Sales to Tech Companies

Alphabet Inc. is selling its custom Tensor Processing Units to external technology companies, expanding its AI hardware business beyond internal cloud and Gemini use.

Alphabet Inc. is expanding its artificial intelligence hardware business by offering its Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) for sale to other technology companies. Previously reserved for internal use within its cloud platform and Gemini AI, the company is now transitioning these custom chips into a commercial product for the broader tech market.

To facilitate this expansion, Alphabet maintains strategic partnerships with Broadcom Inc. and Marvell Technology for custom chip design and development. Broadcom serves as the lead development partner under a long-term agreement, while the partnership with Marvell Technology is projected to generate up to $120 billion in revenue over six years. Alphabet also holds an option to purchase a $12.2 billion stake in Marvell Technology.

Manufacturing is handled by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, which utilizes a chip-on-wafer-on-substrate model to produce the final AI processors. Beyond terrestrial applications, Alphabet has tested its chip technology in space through a satellite project conducted with Space Exploration Technologies Corp.
