Tencent Cloud Defends High AI Spending Amid Strategy Shift

Leadership at Tencent Cloud defended the company's high capital expenditure on artificial intelligence, asserting that strong demand from corporate and consumer sectors justifies the investment. The company is currently shifting its focus toward the enterprise space, specifically through the development of AI agents and products like Work Buddy, which integrates browser capabilities and document editing.
This strategic pivot follows previous admissions by CEO Pony Ma that the company's AI development resembled a "leaky ship." The Cloud chief stated that Tencent has since patched these gaps by prioritizing enterprise AI agents and improving its Hunyuan model family.
While acknowledging the intense competition within the consumer chatbot market, the executive emphasized that the value created by AI is tremendous. The company is now working to optimize compute costs to ensure the economics of its AI infrastructure lead to long-term profitability.
