EU Regrets Mahmoud Abbas Decision to Postpone Palestinian Elections
European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas expressed regret after President Mahmoud Abbas postponed Palestinian legislative and presidential elections to September 2027.
European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas expressed regret on Wednesday after Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas postponed upcoming legislative and presidential elections. The legislative vote, originally set for November 28, and the presidential election, planned for early 2027, are now both scheduled for September 11, 2027.
This announcement follows a call from Kallas on October 13 for Palestinian elections to be held as soon as possible to renew the legitimacy of institutions that have not held votes in nearly 20 years. Kallas argued that advancing the democratic process is essential to ensure citizens can choose their representatives through the ballot box.
While the European Union acknowledged the challenges and limitations facing the Palestinian Authority, it maintained that transparent elections across the occupied Palestinian territory are long overdue. The EU has offered to support the electoral process, including the potential deployment of an EU Election Observation Mission to ensure the eventual vote is fair and credible.
