Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh Launch Digital Census 2027

Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh have initiated the first phases of the Census 2027, marking India's transition to a fully digital census process. In Gujarat, the House Listing and Housing Census began on June 1 and will run through June 30, employing 109,038 enumerators to collect data via mobile applications in 16 languages. A second phase for population and caste enumeration is scheduled for February 9 to February 28, 2027.

Kavinder Gupta, Governor of Himachal Pradesh, launched the state's self-enumeration campaign on June 1 at Lok Bhavan in Shimla. Citizens in Himachal Pradesh can submit information through an online portal until June 15, followed by a house listing phase from June 16 to July 15. Due to severe winter conditions, population enumeration in snow-bound and tribal regions will occur early, from September 11 to September 30, 2026, while other areas will follow the national schedule in February 2027.

Officials in both states emphasized that the digital shift aims to improve the accuracy of socio-economic data used for infrastructure planning and welfare programs. In Gujarat, over 3.74 lakh residents participated in the self-enumeration campaign starting May 17. Authorities have assured the public that all data gathered under the Census Act, 1948, remains confidential and cannot be used for taxation or legal purposes.
