Greenland Opens Ilulissat International Airport to Boost Tourism
Greenland opened a new international airport in Ilulissat on October 30, completing a three-airport expansion program designed to diversify the economy and support future independence.
Greenland opened a new international airport in Ilulissat on Thursday, October 30, 2026. The event marked the completion of a three-airport expansion program that also included new facilities in Nuuk and Qaqortoq. An Air Greenland Airbus A330neo from Copenhagen, Denmark, performed the inaugural flight to the city, known as the City of Icebergs for its UNESCO-listed icefjord.
Jens-Frederik Nielsen, the Prime Minister of Greenland, stated that the investment is essential for establishing the economic foundation necessary for eventual independence from Denmark. The project aims to reduce the territory's reliance on fishing by attracting more international tourists. The new facility includes a 5,000-square-meter terminal and a 2,200-meter runway. While Air Greenland and Icelandair have committed to flights, the government is actively seeking additional carriers from Europe and the United States.
Denmark's Finance Minister Peter Hummelgaard noted that the opening brings hope and optimism following a period of geopolitical tension, specifically regarding interest from U.S. President Donald Trump in acquiring the territory. A security agreement signed in September has since helped stabilize the region. CEO of Greenland Airports Jens Lauridsen described the opening as a historic milestone for North Greenland and the country as a whole.
