Iran Intensifies Crackdown on Starlink Satellite Internet Services

Iranian authorities are deploying signal jamming and drone patrols to seize Starlink equipment, warning they may cut electricity to maintain digital control during crises.

The Government of Iran is intensifying a crackdown on Starlink satellite internet services, which officials characterize as a tool of war used by adversaries for espionage and command and control. To combat the service, authorities have deployed signal jamming, GPS spoofing, and drone patrols to identify and seize terminals. This escalation follows two major nationwide internet shutdowns in 2026 and occurs amid ongoing conflict with the United States and Israel.

Iranian officials have warned that because Starlink bypasses state networks, the government may be forced to cut electricity to maintain digital control during future crises. While the state has suggested it may unblock platforms such as WhatsApp and Google Play, services like YouTube and Telegram must negotiate terms with authorities to operate. Government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani acknowledged that deliberate reductions in internet speed are used to protect state databases and services.

Diplomatic tensions have also risen as Iran summoned Norway's ambassador on October 4 to protest unauthorized Starlink operations. The crackdown targets the technology provided by Space Exploration Technologies Corp., which users employ to bypass state-mandated filtering.
