UK Translation Industry Shrinks as AI Adoption Rises

The translation industry in the United Kingdom is experiencing a systemic decline as businesses increasingly adopt free artificial intelligence models. Data from companydata.com shows that the number of active translation companies fell from a peak of 4,217 at the end of 2024 to 4,088 by mid-2026, marking the first such drop since 2015.

Closures have consistently outnumbered new incorporations since 2025. In that year, 601 companies closed compared to 546 new arrivals. This trend persisted into 2026, with 436 closures and 361 registrations recorded between January and mid-September. Data analyst Uttam Ramdaras noted that the timing of these closures is difficult to ignore given the rise of AI.

Freelancers are facing significant financial pressure. Surveys from the Chartered Institute of Linguists and the Society of Authors indicate a sharp drop in workload and income, with many professionals shifting toward lower-paying machine-output editing. In contrast, RWS Holdings plc, the largest listed language services company in the UK, reported a 5% increase in half-year revenue to approximately £360 million, suggesting a consolidation of the market toward larger firms.
