U.S. Labor Data Shows AI Reshaping White-Collar Employment

U.S. labor market data indicates AI is augmenting professional roles and adding jobs despite warnings of widespread white-collar displacement.

U.S. labor market data from late 2022 through early 2026 indicates that artificial intelligence is reshaping professional employment rather than eliminating it. The United States added approximately 3 million white-collar jobs during this period, with significant growth in roles for radiologists, paralegals, and software developers. Real wages for professional and business services increased by 5%, supporting a model of work where humans utilize AI to automate routine tasks while focusing on high-value analysis.

These findings contrast with warnings from Kristalina Georgieva, who characterized the impact of AI as a tsunami hitting the labor market. Similarly, Dario Amodei predicted that the technology developed by his company could wipe out half of all entry-level white-collar positions. Despite these forecasts, internal data from Anthropic shows that only 4% of occupations utilize AI for the majority of their tasks.

While high-value roles are growing, routine back-office positions remain vulnerable. Employment for administrative assistants and insurance-claims clerks declined by 13% to 20%. The market is seeing a shift toward new roles, such as data annotators and chief AI officers, though entry-level clerical workers face continued risk due to a lack of transferable skills and advances in autonomous software engineering.
