BJP Defends Election Commission Amid Opposition Rigging Allegations

The Bharatiya Janata Party has launched a counter-offensive against allegations from opposition parties, including the Indian National Congress and All India Trinamool Congress, who claim that Indian elections are being rigged. The dispute centers on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, which opposition leaders argue has resulted in large-scale illegal voter deletions. The BJP defends the SIR as a legal framework to remove ineligible entries, with MP Sambit Patra citing West Bengal data to argue that deletions did not disproportionately benefit the ruling party.

Controversy intensified following reports that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi formally objected to several decisions 14 times over 10 months. Pinarayi Vijayan, Leader of Opposition in the Kerala Assembly, demanded the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, alleging that the commission has lost its credibility. These tensions have sparked nationwide protests, leading to the detention of leaders such as Gaurav Gogoi in Assam.

The Election Commission of India maintains that all final SIR decisions were reached unanimously, describing internal queries as part of the normal functioning of a multi-member body. While the BJP dismisses the claims as diversions from electoral defeats, party leaders are increasing outreach to prevent the unrest from escalating into mass street protests.
