IBM Issues Canadian Maple Bonds for First Time Since 2012
IBM is offering four- and eight-year notes in the Canadian bond market to fund general corporate purposes amid a record year for Maple note issuances.
International Business Machines Corp. is entering the Canadian bond market for the first time in 14 years, offering four- and eight-year notes. The company intends to use the proceeds for general corporate purposes.
This move coincides with a record-breaking year for Maple notes, as non-Canadian firms reach an all-time high for such issuances in 2026. Other technology leaders, including Amazon.com Inc. and Alphabet Inc., have also participated in this trend.
IBM's return to the Canadian market follows a difficult financial period. The company's shares have declined 19% this year, driven by weak sales in computer infrastructure and investor anxiety over disruption caused by artificial intelligence.
The issuance is part of a larger global surge in syndicated public bond offerings. U.S. investment-grade notes have reached $1.4 trillion this year, and global issuance is expected to hit $5 trillion on Monday.
