Ballard Power Systems to Supply Hydrogen Trains for Romania
Ballard Power Systems will provide fuel cell modules to Siemens Mobility for Romania's first fleet of hydrogen-powered passenger trains.
Ballard Power Systems secured an order from Siemens Mobility to provide 24 FCrail fuel cell modules to power 12 Mireo Plus H hydrogen passenger trains. The modules will provide a total of 4.8 MW of power for a fleet operated by Romania's Railway Reform Authority.
This project marks the first deployment of hydrogen-powered trains in Romania and the first time the Mireo Plus H platform will be used in Eastern Europe or outside of Germany. The initiative aims to replace diesel engines with zero-emission technology on non-electrified rail lines.
Fuel cell engine deliveries are scheduled for 2027 and 2028. The trains are expected to enter passenger service in 2029.
