Green Party Accuses Christopher Luxon of Delaying Cost-of-Living Relief

The Green Party of Aotearoa New Zealand has criticized Prime Minister Christopher Luxon for failing to implement immediate measures to alleviate the cost-of-living crisis. Co-leader Marama Davidson accused the government of making deliberate policy decisions to keep families struggling, suggesting the administration is using these hardships as a political carrot to gain votes in the upcoming election.

Davidson stated that the Coalition Government dismissed specific offers to pass a solar panel Ratepayer Assistance Scheme and provide free public transport. She argued that there is no reason to avoid cross-party agreements to ease financial pressures on households.

The criticism follows data from Stats NZ's Consumers Price Index showing that household living costs rose 3.2% over the last 12 months. Specific pressures include a 10.8% increase in electricity costs and petrol prices that remain 23.6% higher than the previous year.
