Sudan Civil War Triggers Global Humanitarian and Displacement Crisis

Sudan is facing one of the world's largest humanitarian disasters since the April 2023 civil war began between the Sudanese Armed Forces, led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, led by General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo. Over 14 million people have been displaced, with 19.5 million facing acute hunger and nearly 34 million requiring humanitarian support.

The crisis has escalated with a cholera outbreak in the Kordofan region, recording over 2,000 suspected cases and 170 deaths since May. In Darfur, intercommunal violence has displaced 20,000 people in recent weeks, while more than 938,000 refugees have fled to eastern Chad. Refugees in camps like Goudrane and Metche face a severe water crisis, often receiving less than half the minimum daily supply recommended by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

Human rights organizations and the United Nations have accused the Rapid Support Forces of genocide and ethnic cleansing, specifically targeting the Masalit community in West Darfur. Conversely, the Sudanese Armed Forces face accusations of war crimes; the United States recently imposed sanctions on the military for the alleged use of chemical weapons in 2024.

International response efforts are hampered by severe funding shortages, with only $1.1 billion of the required $2.9 billion received for the 2026 appeal. While the International Committee of the Red Cross has conducted humanitarian law workshops for combatants in Khartoum and Nyala, officials warn that current aid is insufficient to meet the growing needs of the displaced population.
