Micron Invests $10 Billion in AI Research Labs in Boise
Micron Technology is establishing a $10 billion AI memory research hub in Boise as part of a broader $250 billion U.S. manufacturing expansion.
Micron Technology is investing $10 billion to establish Micron Research Labs in Boise, Idaho, a new hub dedicated to next-generation memory and compute systems for the AI economy. Scheduled to break ground in 2027, the facility will integrate researchers from academia, government, and industry to develop breakthroughs in high-bandwidth memory and semiconductor packaging.
This initiative is part of a larger $50 billion expansion in Boise, where the company has already broken ground on two chip manufacturing facilities. These plants are expected to create over 17,000 regional jobs, while Micron's total U.S. manufacturing and R&D commitments exceed $250 billion, aiming to create more than 90,000 jobs nationwide. The company intends to produce 40% of its DRAM in the U.S. by 2035, supported by up to $6.2 billion in CHIPS Act funding.
CEO Sanjay Mehrotra described memory as the strategic infrastructure for AI. The expansion received endorsements from U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang, and Apple CEO Tim Cook. Local support included incentives and tax breaks from Governor Brad Little and Boise Mayor Lauren McLean.
While the boom has generated significant wealth, it has also increased traffic and housing costs in Boise. To address these community impacts, Micron is investing $75 million in workforce and community development and partnering with local authorities on transportation and housing solutions.
