Sea Legend Launches First Regular Arctic Shipping Service

Chinese shipping company Sea Legend is launching the Ice Silk Road, the first regular container shipping service through the Arctic. The weekly service connects Ningbo, China, to Felixstowe, United Kingdom, by skirting the Russian coast via the Northern Sea Route. This path can reduce the typical 40-day voyage time by approximately half and provide new access to Turkish and North African markets.

The initiative responds to increasing volatility and the weaponization of maritime chokepoints in the Middle East, specifically the Bab al-Mandab strait and the Strait of Hormuz, where Houthi rebels and Iran have targeted international shipping. While the route bypasses these conflict zones, it increases reliance on Russia, as the state-controlled corporation Rosatom manages the Northern Sea Route administration and issues sailing permits.

Record sea ice melts have facilitated the increase in Arctic traffic, though the route carries risks including GPS failure, limited search and rescue capabilities, and ecological damage. Many European shipping lines have avoided the path due to these environmental concerns and deteriorating geopolitical relations with Russia.
