EU Designates OpenAI, Reddit and Roblox as Very Large Platforms
The European Commission designated OpenAI, Reddit, and Roblox as very large online platforms, requiring stricter content moderation and transparency under the Digital Services Act.
The European Commission designated OpenAI's ChatGPT, Reddit Inc., and Roblox Corp. as very large online platforms or search engines after each service surpassed 45 million monthly users within the European Union. This designation triggers a set of stringent requirements under the Digital Services Act designed to protect children online and ensure the removal of illegal and harmful content.
Under the new regulations, these companies must implement stricter content moderation protocols, file regular transparency reports, and detail comprehensive risk mitigation plans. Additionally, the platforms are required to pay an annual fee to the EU. Failure to comply with these mandates could result in significant financial penalties, with potential fines reaching up to 6% of a company's annual global sales.
The move continues a trend of European regulatory scrutiny that has drawn criticism from the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump. The U.S. government claims the European Union is specifically targeting American technology firms with these regulatory actions.
