Louisiana State Senator Larry Selders Dies at 44
Louisiana State Senator Larry Selders died Tuesday evening after suffering a suspected heart attack while attending his son's football practice in Baton Rouge.
Louisiana State Senator Larry Selders, a 44-year-old Democrat representing the 14th District, died on July 7, 2026, after suffering a suspected heart attack. Selders collapsed while attending his son's football practice in Baton Rouge. The medical emergency followed a recent health struggle with a heart condition, including a May 2026 hospitalization for an aneurysm that required seven hours of surgery and caused him to miss much of the final month of the legislative session.
A licensed social worker specializing in mental health, Selders served in the Louisiana House of Representatives from 2020 to 2025 before winning a special election to the State Senate in February 2025. During his tenure, he was known for supporting abortion rights and the state's Education Savings Account program.
Governor Jeff Landry and other state officials described Selders as a "gentle giant" and a dedicated public servant. Tributes from colleagues highlighted his integrity and his role as an advocate for children and mental health. Selders is survived by his wife, Dr. Kendra Michael, and two sons, Larry and Luke. Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday, July 14, at Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
