Former Virgin Media Copywriter Applies to 5,000 Jobs

Joe Emery describes a brutal UK job market and severe mental health decline after remaining unemployed for over two years following layoffs at Virgin Media O2.

Former senior copywriter Joe Emery has remained unemployed since August 2023 after being laid off from Virgin Media O2, which cut 2,000 workers during that period. Despite submitting more than 5,000 job applications, Emery describes the United Kingdom job market as brutal, citing a surge in competition and a sharp decline in vacancies.

The prolonged unemployment led to a severe mental health crisis for Emery, resulting in self-harm and his admission to a psychiatric unit in June 2025. He also reported physical ailments, including hair loss and panic attacks. He has since used LinkedIn to document his experiences and advocate for mental health awareness, though the posts have drawn criticism from some users.

Emery has called on the Government of the United Kingdom to increase support for job seekers and create specific plans to assist workers displaced by artificial intelligence. He characterized the current Jobseeker's Allowance as a pitiful amount of money. These personal struggles occur while the Office for National Statistics reported the UK unemployment rate stood at 4.7% in August 2025.
