Brendan Boyle Declines 2028 Senate Run to Chair Budget Committee

Representative Brendan Boyle will not challenge Senator John Fetterman in 2028, opting instead to lead the House Budget Committee following Democratic election victories.

U.S. Representative Brendan Boyle announced Wednesday that he will not seek the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate in 2028. The decision means Boyle will not challenge incumbent Senator John Fetterman for the Pennsylvania seat.

Boyle, a Democrat from Philadelphia, decided to remain in the House of Representatives to serve as chairman of the House Budget Committee. This appointment follows Democratic victories in the 2026 midterm elections that flipped both the U.S. House and Senate. Boyle is expected to be the first Pennsylvanian to lead the committee in nearly four decades.

He stated that after consulting with current senators and past committee chairs, he determined he could have a larger impact on public policy and the nation's fiscal health as chairman than as a freshman senator. The announcement comes amid reports of dissatisfaction among some Democrats regarding Senator Fetterman's performance during Donald Trump's second term.

While Boyle has ruled out a bid, other potential Democratic primary challengers to Fetterman include former Representative Conor Lamb and Representative Chris Deluzio, who has more openly positioned himself for a run.
