Apple Rejects AI Companionship in Siri iOS 27 Redesign
Apple launched a revamped Siri AI at WWDC 2026 designed for utility and privacy while explicitly prohibiting romantic roleplay or emotional companionship.
Apple unveiled a revamped Siri AI at WWDC 2026, emphasizing utility, privacy, and context-awareness over emotional engagement. Craig Federighi, Apple's Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, stated that the redesigned assistant in iOS 27 is intentionally built for practical use and will not serve as a romantic partner or AI companion.
Federighi criticized the industry trend of sycophantic chatbots designed to maximize engagement through false emotional bonds. To enforce this boundary, Apple implemented technical guardrails and thread lockouts, allowing Siri to abruptly end conversations if users attempt romantic roleplay or make inappropriate overtures.
Marketing executive Greg Joswiak added that AI should integrate seamlessly into features so users are not required to be prompt experts. The new system leverages Apple Intelligence and on-device processing to protect user data while understanding personal context, aiming to return to the original vision of a helpful digital assistant rather than a parasocial relationship.
