UN Reports Acute Food Insecurity in Gaza One Year After Ceasefire
The World Food Programme reports 1.4 million people in Gaza remain acutely food insecure one year after the ceasefire between Hamas and Israel.
The World Food Programme reports that 1.4 million people in Gaza remain acutely food insecure one year after a ceasefire between Hamas and Israel. Out of a total population of 2.1 million, approximately 200,000 people are currently categorized as one step below famine.
Humanitarian groups and health experts warn that a lack of dietary diversity is creating severe health threats for pregnant women and children. A study by Medecins du Monde found that 93 percent of pregnant or breastfeeding women in the region exhibit symptoms of anemia.
These findings contrast with statements from the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories, an Israeli defense ministry organization that describes the humanitarian situation as stable. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification had previously declared a state of famine in August 2025, a claim the Cabinet of Israel denounced as a lie. The UN lifted that specific declaration in December 2025 after reporting an increase in supplies.
