France Inflation Hits 3.4% as Energy Costs Surge

France reported a September inflation rate of 3.4%, driven by rising energy costs and increasing pressure on the European Central Bank to raise interest rates.

France's harmonized inflation rate rose to 3.4% in September, surpassing economist expectations of 3.1% to 3.2% and marking a significant increase from 2.6% in August. The Institut National De La Statistique Et Des Etudes Economiques attributed the surge primarily to energy costs, which jumped 21% year-on-year as petroleum and gas prices climbed amid Middle East tensions. Prices for food and services also accelerated during the month.

France's domestic consumer price index rose to 3.0%, exceeding the 2.8% forecast. These figures align with high inflation reports from Spain, where inflation reached 5%, and Belgium, where price growth also remained well above the 2% target set by the European Central Bank.

The persistent price growth across these eurozone economies increases pressure on the European Central Bank to raise interest rates during its October 29 meeting. Christine Lagarde, president of the bank, has noted that inflation has been largely relegated to the energy sector.
