Tower Hamlets Residents Face Seven Months of Water Shortages

Hundreds of residents across nine blocks of flats in Tower Hamlets, east London, have experienced severe water shortages for more than seven months. Families report that taps have run dry, leaving them unable to cook, clean, or flush toilets, and forcing a reliance on bottled water and public showers.

Poplar Harca, the housing association landlord, attributed the shortages to fluctuating pressure levels and delayed permanent repairs. The organization stated that the installation of new pump rooms was delayed to follow a statutory section 20 consultation process with leaseholders regarding costs. Thames Water added that low pressure likely stems from internal plumbing issues and extensive new development in the area.

Local MP Uma Kumaran and residents have condemned the situation as a gross failure of landlord duties. While Poplar Harca denies that the water supply ever stopped completely, repairs for six of the blocks are scheduled between August 5 and September 8, 2026. Work on the remaining three blocks is not slated to begin until August 27.
