OpenAI Launches $4 Billion Enterprise Deployment Venture

OpenAI established the OpenAI Deployment Company to embed engineers in enterprises, sparking a massive sell-off in Indian IT services stocks.

OpenAI launched the OpenAI Deployment Company (DeployCo), a joint venture backed by over $4 billion in initial capital to accelerate enterprise AI adoption. The venture is majority-owned by OpenAI and supported by a consortium of 19 firms, including TPG, Advent International, Bain Capital, and Brookfield Asset Management. As part of the launch, OpenAI agreed to acquire Tomoro, a UK-based AI consulting firm, adding approximately 150 forward-deployed engineers to embed directly within client organizations to redesign workflows and infrastructure.

This strategic shift toward high-value consulting aims to overcome implementation bottlenecks and compete with rival Anthropic, which launched a similar services venture targeting mid-sized companies. The move signals a transition for AI labs from providing software-as-a-service to active operational deployment, with DeployCo reaching an estimated launch valuation of $14 billion.

The initiative triggered a sharp decline in India's $280-billion IT services sector. On May 12, 2026, the Nifty IT index fell nearly 4%, with shares of Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys, and HCL Technologies hitting 52-week lows. Investors fear that AI companies are becoming direct competitors to traditional outsourcing models, which is further evidenced by Tata Consultancy Services reporting its first year-on-year dollar revenue decline since its 2004 IPO. By May 14, the Nifty IT index had fallen nearly 40% below its December 2024 peak as global spending shifts toward AI infrastructure.
