Waymo Prepares Driverless Ride Service Launch in Tampa
Waymo is preparing to launch its autonomous ride service in Tampa and is exploring further expansion into Pinellas County.
Waymo, the autonomous driving subsidiary of Alphabet Inc., is preparing to launch its commercial driverless ride service in Tampa, Florida. The company has been testing vehicles in the city since December 2025 and is now working toward a formal public rollout.
To explore broader growth in the Tampa Bay area, Waymo representatives met with St. Petersburg officials on August 11 to discuss potential expansion into Pinellas County. While the company has not announced concrete plans for the county, it expressed a desire to serve more of the region over time.
This move follows Waymo's established operations in Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Miami, and Orlando. The expansion comes as competition increases in the Florida market, following the launch of Tesla's Robotaxi service in parts of Tampa last month.
