CISLAC Demands Democratic Reforms for Nigeria's 66th Anniversary

The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre urged Nigeria to protect civic space and end impunity to mark the country's 66th Independence anniversary.

The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) called for the strengthening of democratic institutions and an end to impunity to mark Nigeria's 66th Independence anniversary. In a statement issued by Executive Director Auwal Musa Rafsanjani, the organization warned that Nigerian democracy risks losing public confidence if it fails to protect civic space and deliver economic prosperity.

CISLAC specifically condemned the arrest and remand of five men in Maiduguri, Borno State, who were charged with criminal conspiracy and thuggery for wearing T-shirts inscribed with "Tinubu Must Go." The organization identified corruption, insecurity, and injustice as primary threats to national stability and urged anti-corruption agencies and the National Assembly to operate without political interference.

Looking toward the 2027 general elections, the group called for a transition from a nominal democracy to one that provides tangible welfare, including food security and quality education. To ensure accountability, CISLAC announced plans to collaborate with Amnesty International to document officials who undermine civic freedoms.
