Tech Leaders Debate AI Impact on Workweek Length

Jeff Bezos and other business leaders predict AI productivity will shorten the workweek to three days, while Sam Altman argues competitiveness will prevent such a shift.

Prominent business leaders are divided over whether artificial intelligence will fundamentally reduce the standard workweek. Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon, predicts that AI-driven productivity will allow workers to complete five days of labor in three, potentially making two-earner households a choice rather than a necessity. This view is shared by JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, who forecasts a three-and-a-half-day workweek for future generations, and Zoom CEO Eric Yuan, who believes every company will eventually support three or four-day schedules.

Other industry figures offer more extreme or varied timelines. Bill Gates suggests free access to intelligence could lead to two or three-day workweeks, while Elon Musk claims AI and robotics could make work optional within 10 to 20 years. However, Musk warns the transition will be bumpy and suggests government checks to offset potential unemployment.

In contrast, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman argues that human competitiveness will prevent a mass shift toward shorter workweeks. He notes that historical technological promises of increased leisure have rarely materialized at scale in society and does not expect AI to change that pattern.
