Elon Musk Forms Committees to Explore SpaceX Tesla Merger
Elon Musk announced that SpaceX and Tesla have formed special committees of independent directors to explore a potential merger of the two companies.
CEO Elon Musk announced on Tuesday that SpaceX and Tesla have established special committees of independent directors to evaluate a potential merger. Speaking during a SpaceX earnings call, Musk stated that combining the companies would be a good idea because of their complementary efforts in robotics, chip design, connectivity, and artificial intelligence.
A merger would create a corporate entity with a combined market capitalization of approximately $3.5 trillion, which could represent the largest corporate tie-up in history. Musk noted that he cannot participate in the committee discussions because he is a conflicted party. He cautioned that a merger is not a certainty and would require shareholder approval, specifically a 50 percent vote among Tesla shareholders.
The announcement follows SpaceX's report of its first quarterly profit as a public company. The aerospace firm recorded a net profit of $4.4 billion for the July-September quarter, a result driven by growth in its satellite-internet and AI businesses.
