Retail Investors Pour Billions Into AI Stocks Amid Institutional Retreat

Retail traders net bought 9.1 billion dollars in US equities last week, aggressively targeting AI and neocloud stocks as institutional investors shift toward defensive assets.

Retail investors are aggressively increasing positions in artificial intelligence stocks, including semiconductors and neocloud infrastructure, while institutional investors shift toward defensive assets. Data from Citadel Securities shows retail traders net bought 9.1 billion dollars in US equities last week, marking the highest weekly total since June. Of this total, 2.6 billion dollars flowed into semiconductors and a record 700 million dollars entered neocloud stocks.

This retail appetite persisted even during a sharp sell-off in CoreWeave, a neocloud firm that saw record buying from retail traders despite plunging stock prices driven by debt fears. This activity contrasts with a growing buyer's strike among institutional traders, who are citing high inflation, bond market volatility, and concerns over AI-linked debt as reasons for their hesitation.

Market data indicates a widening divergence in conviction. While retail buying picks up, institutional appetite for dip-buying is fading. Investors at the institutional level are rotating away from growth and quality stocks in favor of defensive positions.
