Missouri Voters Reject Near-Total Abortion Ban in Midterms

Missouri voters defeated a proposed constitutional amendment to re-impose a near-total abortion ban and prohibit gender-affirming care for minors during the November 2026 elections.

Missouri voters rejected Amendment 3 in the November 3, 2026, midterm elections, defeating a proposal that would have re-imposed a near-total abortion ban and prohibited gender-affirming care for minors. The measure, placed on the ballot by the Republican-led legislature, would have restricted abortion to cases of medical emergency, fetal anomaly, or rape and incest within the first 12 weeks. This defeat reaffirms a 2024 ballot initiative that legalized abortion in the state.

Governor Mike Kehoe and other supporters campaigned for the measure, but opponents outspent them significantly, raising over $26 million compared to approximately $7 million. While Republican state Auditor Scott Fitzpatrick suggested the ban on transgender medical procedures was more popular than the abortion ban, the overall measure failed.

Early results from 1,850 of 3,214 precincts reported by the Missouri Secretary of State's Office show that voters supported Amendment 6, which makes it harder for legislators to reverse citizen-ballot initiatives, and Amendment 8. Voters rejected Amendment 3, Amendment 7, and Proposition A. The elections also included races for the U.S. House of Representatives and the Missouri auditor, while Boone County voters considered a sales tax for a new jail via Proposition L.
