Uber Executives Predict End of Private Car Ownership

Uber executives envision a future where private vehicle ownership and driver's licenses disappear within 15 to 20 years. Andrew Macdonald, president and chief operating officer of Uber, described the individually owned car as the most inefficient asset a person can own, noting that vehicles typically sit idle 98% of the day while continuing to depreciate and incur insurance costs.

Macdonald predicts a transportation ecosystem centered on autonomous vehicles, public transit, bikes, and scooters. This outlook aligns with previous statements from Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi, who predicted that robots would fulfill the majority of Uber trips within the same timeframe.

While Uber has ceased developing its own self-driving fleet, the company is positioning itself as a platform for autonomous vehicle partners, including Waymo and Waabi.
