ADNOC Partners With OpenAI to Deploy Frontier AI Technology

Abu Dhabi National Oil Company signed a multiyear deal with OpenAI and G42 to integrate advanced AI agents across its energy operations.

The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) signed a multiyear agreement with OpenAI and G42 on November 2 during the ADIPEC 2026 energy conference in Abu Dhabi. This partnership makes ADNOC the first energy company to deploy OpenAI's Frontier technology, which uses AI agents to connect field planning, investment, and commercial decision-making. The system will integrate OpenAI's GPT models with industrial data on G42's UAE-based infrastructure to reduce oilfield development planning time from months to hours and forecast crude oil values while resources remain underground.

The deal is part of a broader series of four agreements between OpenAI and Abu Dhabi entities. These include a partnership with Mubadala for investment analysis, a five-year adoption agreement with Inception42, and a "Machine-Readable Government" initiative to convert public policies into AI-readable formats. The collaboration also includes workforce training and cybersecurity cooperation through OpenAI's Daybreak Blue initiative.

The announcement occurred as ADIPEC 2026 opened as the largest edition to date, featuring over 2,250 exhibiting companies. The event took place amid regional security concerns; some U.S. energy executives cancelled travel to the UAE due to potential military conflict between the United States and other regional actors. Despite these tensions, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman met with Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to finalize the integration of AI across the public and private sectors.
