HDFC Bank CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan to Retire in October

Sashidhar Jagdishan will retire as CEO of HDFC Bank on October 26, 2026, after declining to seek a third term.

The board of HDFC Bank announced that Managing Director and CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan will retire on October 26, 2026. Jagdishan declined to seek reappointment for a third term, prompting the board of India's largest private lender to fast-track the selection of a successor.

Jagdishan's departure follows a period of instability for the bank, including a 27% drop in stock value this year. The bank also faced leadership turmoil in March when former chairman Atanu Chakraborty resigned abruptly, citing ethical concerns. More recently, the board penalized Jagdishan and two other executives for business overreach involving deposit rates for a state agency.

Since taking the role in 2020, Jagdishan led the 2023 merger between HDFC Bank and its parent company, HDFC Ltd. While the merger was a landmark event, some investors have expressed frustration that the transaction has not yet produced tangible financial gains.
