Gaza Cease-Fire Fails to Bring Peace One Year Later

Residents and the United Nations report that a U.S.-brokered cease-fire in Gaza has failed to deliver reconstruction or peace one year after implementation.

One year after a U.S.-brokered cease-fire took effect in the Gaza Strip, the agreement remains largely ineffective. While the intensity of attacks has decreased, the Cabinet of Israel continues to conduct airstrikes and maintains control over all entry points and more than 70% of the territory, which severely limits the flow of humanitarian aid.

The United Nations reports that 82% of standing structures in Gaza were damaged or destroyed by mid-2026. This widespread destruction has left the majority of the population of over 2 million people displaced in camps across the region.

Administrative efforts to transition the territory away from Hamas rule include the establishment of the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza, led by technocrat Ali Shaath. Additionally, five countries, including Morocco, have committed to joining the International Stabilization Force for post-war preparations, though these troops have not yet begun operations in the territory.
