Lula Lead Narrows Against Flávio Bolsonaro in Brazil Polls

Recent polling indicates a tightening race for Brazil's October presidential election, with Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva seeing his lead over conservative challenger Flávio Bolsonaro narrow. A survey released Monday by Nexus and commissioned by BTG Pactual shows the candidates in a statistical tie for a second-round runoff, with Lula holding 46% support compared to Bolsonaro's 45%.

This represents a decrease from the previous week's trends. A Datafolha poll released Friday had placed Lula with a 4-point advantage, holding 47% against Bolsonaro's 43% in a simulated runoff. In first-round scenarios, Lula continues to lead, polling at 41% in the Nexus survey and 39% in the Datafolha survey, while Bolsonaro follows at 37% and 33% respectively. Other candidates, including Ronaldo Caiado, maintain marginal support around 5%.

The political climate remains volatile as official campaigning begins. Lula's approval rating has declined to 47%, and the Federal Police are investigating his eldest son for suspected illicit business dealings following Supreme Court authorization. Meanwhile, Bolsonaro's numbers previously dipped after reports emerged that he sought financing from a jailed banker for a film about his father.

Voters will cast ballots on October 4. Because no candidate is near an outright majority, a runoff is considered likely for October 25.
