Russian Drone Crash in Romania Follows Massive Ukraine Strikes
The Government of Romania condemned a Russian drone crash in Galati that occurred during a massive wave of Russian aerial attacks across Ukraine.
A Russian drone crashed in the southeastern Romanian city of Galati on April 25, 2026, damaging an electricity pole and a farm outbuilding. The Government of Romania evacuated 200 people and cut gas supplies as a precaution. In response, Foreign Minister Oana Țoiu summoned the Russian ambassador to Bucharest, characterizing the incident as a violation of international law and national sovereignty.
The spillover occurred during a massive 20-hour Russian aerial campaign involving 666 missiles and drones targeting Ukrainian urban centers. In Dnipro, strikes on an apartment block killed at least eight people and injured 49. Across Ukraine, the assault resulted in at least 10 deaths and dozens of injuries, while Ukraine's air force intercepted the majority of the incoming munitions. Ukraine retaliated with long-range Liutyi drone strikes hitting targets as far as Yekaterinburg and Chelyabinsk in Russia's Ural Mountains.
As part of NATO's Enhanced Air Policing mission, two British Royal Air Force Eurofighter Typhoon jets scrambled from the 86th Air Base in Fetești to monitor the border. While the Romanian Ministry of National Defense initially stated pilots had authorization to engage, both UK and Romanian officials later clarified that the jets did not enter Ukrainian airspace or fire upon any targets, as the detected drones remained in Ukrainian territory near Reni. The Romanian Ministry of Defence condemned the debris fall as a threat to regional stability and the collective security of NATO.
