Osun Police Arrest Environment Commissioner Amid Election Tensions

The Osun State Police Command arrested Mayowa Adejoorin, the Commissioner for Environment and Sanitation, during an investigation into an incident in Ilesa. Police spokesperson Abiodun Ojelabi reported that operatives recovered expanded cartridges and Amotekun personnel caps at the scene of the incident.

The Imole Campaign Council, which supports Governor Ademola Adeleke's re-election bid under the Accord Party, condemned the arrest as a "bandit-like abduction." The council alleges that Adejoorin was targeted because he refused to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC). They further claim that over 60 party members are being detained across the country to manipulate the upcoming August 15 governorship election.

Additionally, the council accused Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Gotan of operating a "parallel police structure" to assist APC thugs in attacking Accord leaders. The council alleges Gotan held a clandestine meeting with APC leaders, including Senator Francis Fadahunsi and Remi Omowaiye, to coordinate attacks. In response, the council has petitioned Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu to transfer Gotan out of Osun State and secure the release of all detained party members.
