IMF Chief Urges Governments to Tackle Fiscal Debt Risks

Kristalina Georgieva called on governments to establish sustainable debt plans and urged central banks to maintain focus on price stability to combat inflation.

International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva urged governments to address rising fiscal challenges and establish credible plans to ensure sustainable debt and deficits. Speaking Tuesday at the IMF headquarters, Georgieva warned that there is no room for complacency regarding global economic stability.

Georgieva described the current global economy as a "tug of war" between positive demand shocks driven by artificial intelligence investments and negative supply shocks resulting from the war in Iran. She called on central banks to remain laser-focused on their price stability mandates to combat stubborn inflation.

Among the primary risks to the economic outlook, Georgieva identified shrinking oil and gas reserves ahead of winter, food insecurity caused by El Niño, and the potential impact of AI on financial stability. The IMF is scheduled to release a new global economy assessment during its annual meetings in Bangkok this October.
