World Bank Commits $3.3 Billion to Middle Corridor Trade Route

The World Bank and partners invested $3.3 billion to strengthen the Trans-Caspian Transport Route as geopolitical tensions disrupt traditional Eurasian trade paths.

The World Bank Group and its partners committed $3.3 billion on April 14-15 to develop the Trans-Caspian Transport Route, also known as the Middle Corridor. This investment aims to diversify Eurasian trade by providing an overland alternative to the Russian-led Northern Corridor and the Strait of Hormuz, both of which have become unpredictable due to the war in Ukraine and tensions between the United States and Iran.

Funding is split between two primary infrastructure projects. Turkey will receive $1.9 billion for the Istanbul North Rail Crossing, while Kazakhstan will receive $1.4 billion to reconstruct the Karagandy-Zhezkazgan highway. These upgrades are intended to support the growing interest from China, the United States, and the European Union in securing logistics for critical materials.

Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz stated that geopolitical instability has transformed the Middle Corridor from an alternative into a mandatory choice. Despite the funding, some analysts suggest that existing technical and infrastructural constraints may prevent the route from fully replacing northern trade flows in the immediate future.
